Their intelligence and the way they outsmart me at every turn. Oh and the hair! I couldn't live without an Elkie to pluck.

I love their looks, a natural dog, but it's their personality that gets under your skin, if a dog can have a sense of humour they seem to have it.

Having more or less been born into the breed, I've always felt it was a case of them choosing me vs. the other way round! However, the thing I like the best about Elkhounds is their devout loyalty... they love you unconditionally, never forget you (as we have witnessed time and again with puppies who left early in life with new owners only to go mad when they saw us years later) and their stoic-ness (?is that a word?). Those are probably my top three, but there are scores of others!

Their adaptability, affection without being over needy.

My first came when I was on my own with two preschool children, the youngest only a toddler.

Compared to my needy, highly strung herding breed previous dog they were so much more suited to family life.
